Respiratory allergies are caused by airborne allergens. They can occur indoors or outdoors and can be seasonal or year-round.
Aeroallergenic substances known to cause allergies in cats and dogs include pollen, dust, mold, volatile organic compounds (such as perfumes), and smoke.
When the bronchi are obstructed, asthma causes breathing difficulties in cats. Rattling may be emitted by the animal, which remains open-mouthed for a while, sometimes with wild eyes.
Symptoms :
- Red and watery eyes
- Rubs head and eyes due to itchy eyes
- Runny nose
- Coughing, sneezing or wheezing
- Skin rashes or itching
Suggestions:
If your pet is showing symptoms of respiratory allergies, there are a few changes you can make:
- Avoid litters that produce dust;
- Throw out harsh chemical cleaning products and replace them with pet-safe products;
- Wipe down your pet after every outdoor adventure;
- Avoid incense, candles, perfumes and essential oils.
If your pet still suffers from allergies despite all the changes made to your home, have a diagnosis made by your veterinarian to rule out any other possibilities.
In horses, emphysema is the most commonly encountered allergy.
"Growth", often called RAO or "emphysema" in horses, is now considered a form of equine asthma.
It is the result of an allergy generally caused by the inhalation of dust or, more rarely, pollen. Prolonged contact with these allergic factors causes permanent irritation of the large and small bronchi in the sick horse.
Allergic respiratory diseases tend to occur in older horses, with chronic respiratory diseases such as equine asthma and SPAOPD (summer pasture-associated obstructive pulmonary disease) developing in horses up to 6-7 years of age.
With allergic respiratory disease, this can be a year-round risk. More time spent in the stable during the winter and increased hay intake can increase exposure to molds, mites and bacterial endotoxin. Again, older horses with equine asthma in particular, may experience periods of flare-ups at various times of the year, as they may be sensitive to molds growing on trees, crops and shrubs and pollens.
COMMON SIGNS OF RESPIRATORY DISEASE IN HORSES
- Cough
- Nasal discharge at rest and/or after exercise (any color and coming from one or both nostrils)
- Increased respiratory rate
- Increased respiratory effort
- Flaring of the nostrils
- Breathing noise at rest or during exercise
- Poor recovery after exercise
- Performance generally lower than expected
Hygiene measures to follow
To avoid an emphysema crisis, it is essential to limit contact with allergens. A horse that lives outside and is allergic to pollen should be brought back into the stable. If it is not possible to take a horse that lives in a dusty stable out to the field, care should be taken to limit the formation and release of micro-molds and dust. Some examples of measures to follow:
- Choose quality hay, dried when baled;
- Wet the hay by soaking it in water for at least ½ hour before distributing it;
- Favor the hay bag;
- Dust the stable regularly (including the ceilings), taking care to take the horse out beforehand;
- Prefer a litter made from dust-free wood shavings.
